Marin van Heel is one of the main developers of the single-particle cryogenic Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM) methodologies in use worldwide today. After obtaining his PhD from University of Groningen, The Netherlands, he became head of interdisciplinary structural biology group at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin. He was the main developer of IMAGIC-4D software package, one of the currently used programs in cryo-EM. He was the founder and first Director of the Imperial College Centre for Structural Biology (IC-CSB; 1997), and of the Imperial College Centre for Biomolecular Electron Microscopy (CBEM, 1997). He initiated a series of international cryo-EM schools/workshops that since have become a regular event (www.Brazil-School.org) with participants from all continents. Marin van Heel is currently a Senior Researcher at LNNano/CNPEM in Campinas Brazil. He is Emeritus Professor of Cryo-EM Data Processing at Leiden University and Emeritus Professor of Structural Biology at Imperial College London. The main aim of his current research is to resolve the 3D structure of biological complexes at atomic resolution (~3Å) and more specifically, to resolve 3D structures of complexes in different co-existing functional states (?4D? analysis). Single-Particle Cryogenic Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM) has now gone through a ?resolution revolution? making cryo-EM the method-of-choice to elucidate the structure of large biological complexes such as the ribosome, or viruses like the dengue or the Zika virus. Marin van Heel is the recipient of the 1987 Ernst-Ruska Award of the DGE and of the 2017 Wiley Award in Biomedical Sciences, both for ?Pioneering Developments in Electron Microscopy?.
