Functional diversity of intact and regenerating Amazon, Atlantic, and Cerrado systems using hyperspectral imagery
Descrição: Brazil is among the most biodiverse nations in the world, containing an estimated 20% of the Earth's biodiversity. The Amazon forest, Cerrado and Atlantic forest represent 85% of the Brazil area, yet the future of these biomes in terms of ecosystem services is highly uncertain because they are subject to fragmentation, degradation and climate risk, and because we lack knowledge on how their functional diversity is related to ecosystem services. Assessing function, composition, and diversity, and their changes, is challenging because of the difficulties with species identification in high-diversity ecosystems and the large number of co-varying environmental factors. We propose an innovative approach, connecting intensive ecological measurements with the larger-scale context by deploying hyperspectral measurement technology on airborne remote sensing coupled with an unparalleled field dataset available from RAINFOR, BIOTA, GEM, LBA and the FAPESP-NERC proposal 'Understanding Brazilian Biomes' associated with this proposal. We aim to establish as close as possible the links between the on-ground and remote measurements, via hyperspectral assessment of tree species canopy spectroscopy in the three biomes. Once established, we will use these relationships to gain insights at the larger scale. More specifically, this Young Investigator project will tackle the following questions across the three biomes: Can airborne spectroscopy from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) adequately characterize canopy chemistry? Are ecosystem biogeochemical flows in plant matter identifiable in the hyperspectral images? To what extent can hyperspectral data of canopies be used to estimate biomass production and storage in intact versus regenerating vegetation? Do higher levels of diversity confer resilience to environmental disturbances? And, in combination with Landsat and MODIS images, to what extent are Amazon and Cerrado systems shifting? Our in-depth exploration of the potential of hyperspectral techniques is expected to provide new methods to describe and explore ecosystems services at larger scale, and their relationships with functional biodiversity. Given current lack of knowledge on the role of functional diversity in maintaining ecosystem services in the face of global change the project will substantially advance the state-of-the-art research for the Brazilian biomes, while supporting environmental planning in Brazil aimed at mitigating climate impacts, maintaining carbon stocks and protecting biodiversity and ecosystems services..
