Graduado em Agronomia Tropical (Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia - 1983) e em Ciências Biológicas (Universidade Federal do Pará - 1983); Mestrado em Forest Ecology & Conservation - University of Florida, Gainesville (1986) e PhD em Tropical Ecology and Conservation - University of Cambridge, Cambridge (1991). Foi Professor do Depto de Ecologia da USP (1993-1996). Atualmente é Professor (Full Professor) in Ecologia e Conservacao Tropical - University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. Tem vasta experiência na área de ecologia de conservacao, com ênfase em ecologia aplicada, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: manejo de recursos naturais em florestas tropicais, ecologia de paisagem, ecologia de população, ecologia de comunidades de vertebrados em florestas tropicais, e socio-economia de uso de recursos naturais. Efeitos ecológicos espacialmente explícitos de corte seletivo em vertebrados de médio e grande porte na Amazônia brasileira

Descrição: A crescente demanda por produtos madeireiros e o consequente aumento da atividade de corte seletivo ao longo das Florestas Tropicais de todo mundo tem levantado uma preocupação para a conservação das florestas. A Amazônia ainda detém grande parte de seu território florestado e por isso tornou-se foco das especulações da indústria madeireira, visto o declínio das florestas da Ásia e África. Neste sentido, entender a resposta do corte seletivo sobre os organismos responsáveis por grande parte da regeneração e sucessão das espécies arbóreas, os vertebrados de médio e grande porte, torna-se essencial para a sustentabilidade da floresta. Por isso, esse projeto pretende avaliar o efeito desta atividade antrópica sobre a estrutura desses organismos, gerando dados para o uso sustentável da Floresta Amazônica. Para isso, dados da estrutura da população desses animais serão obtidos através da metodologia de transectos lineares. Esses dados serão analisados juntamente com dados espacialmente explícitos do histórico do distúrbio, espécies arbóreas e quantidade de madeira extraída, assim como o tempo entre o corte e o presente momento. A interpretação em conjunto desses dados irá facilitar a análise de como a estrutura espacial da composição florística está influenciando independentemente a composição e abundância dos vertebrados de médio e grande porte. Com isso, recomendações para um manejo mais adequado para corte seletivo serão elaboradas com o intuito de minimizar os efeitos negativos da extração madeireira e maximizar a conservação dos vertebrados de médio e grande porte, alcançando a sustentabilidade entre biodiversidade e os recursos florestais..
