Mikhail possui graduação em Matematica Aplicada - Moscow State University (1991), mestrado em Ciéncias da Computação - University of Wisconsin - Madison (1992) e doutorado em Ciéncias da Computação - University of Wisconsin - Madison (1995). Atualmente é pesquisador titular da Associação Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: problemas variacionais e de otimização, métodos Newtonianos (SQP, SQCQP, active-set, ..), algoritmos baseados em métodos de pontos próximais inexatos (decomposição, de feixe, ...), condições de regularidade e de otimalidade, ... Faz parte de corpo editorial (Associate Editor) das revistas internacionais de nível mais alto da área de sua atuação: "SIAM Journal on Optimization" (desde 2009), "Mathematical Programming" (desde 2005) e "Optimization Methods and Software" (desde 2002).
