Possui graduação em Medicina pela Universidade de São Paulo (1984), doutorado em Ciências (Fisiologia Geral) pela Universidade de São Paulo (1989) e pós-doutorado em Fisiologia e Biofísica pela Universidade de Hahnemann. É professor titular do Departamento de Neurobiologia e Co-Diretor do Centro de Neuroengenharia da Duke University (EUA). Em 2003, retornou ao Brasil com a ideia de usar a ciência como um agente de transformação social e econômica, tendo o estado do Rio Grande do Norte como início desse projeto, do qual nasceu a Associação Alberto Santos Dumont para Apoio à Pesquisa (AASDAP) e, em sequência, o Instituto Santos Dumont (ISD). É fundador e preside voluntariamente a AASDAP desde sua criação em 2004. É fundador e também preside voluntariamente o Conselho de Administração do ISD desde sua criação em 2013. É Pesquisador do Instituto Internacional de Neurociências Edmond e Lily Safra (IIN-ELS) e Coordenador do Projeto Andar de Novo, desenvolvido na AASDAP em São Paulo, que tem como objetivo demonstrar o potencial das interfaces cérebro-máquina para uso clínico em reabilitação motora de pessoas com paralisia causada por danos neurológicos. Tem experiência na área de Fisiologia, com ênfase em Neurofisiologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: informática médica, eletrofisiologia, sistemas sensoriais, sistema somestésico e próteses neurológicas. Andar de Novo
Descrição: O objetivo geral deste projeto é demonstrar o potencial das ICMs para uso clínico em reabilitação motora, por meio da criação da primeira neuropróteses de corpo inteiro com capacidade de restaurar a mobilidade em pacientes paralisados por dano neurológico. Essa neuroprótese será formada por uma ICM que utilizará comandos motores extraídos da atividade elétrica cortical para controlar um exoesqueleto de corpo inteiro..
