2002 - AtualCenários Amazônicos: modelando as interações entre o uso da terra, fogo e clima
Descrição: Este programa engloba projetos sobre impactos ambientais desencadeados por desmatamento, extração madeireira e mineral, proliferação de incêndios florestais e pesca comercial que estão mudando a biodiversidade, a qualidade da água e o clima na região amazônica. O governo brasileiro está planejando realizar grandes investimentos na região amazônicas através do Programa Avança Brasil, entre suas metas para os próximos anos estão a quase duplicação da extensão das estradas pavimentadas e a construção de portos, hidrovias, ferrovias e usinas hidrolétricas. Embora exista consenso de que a região de uma infra-estrutura melhor, obras desta natureza têm potencial de gerar grandes impactos ambientais e sócio-econômicos negativos. antes de implantá-los, portanto, é necessário promover uma profunda avaliação de seus impactos e um amplo processo de discussão com todos os atores sociais interessados. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo estimular o debate em torno desta questão, e contribuir para evitar que se repitam os erros ocorridos no passado..

1997 - AtualEfeitos de exclusão de chuva sobre a floresta amazônica ("Seca Floresta")
Descrição: O programa de Ecologia Florestal do IPAM tem como objetivo principal analisar os impactos da ocupação humana sobre o funcionamento e biodiversidade das florestas da região amazônica. Muitas das pesquisas deste programa vêm sendo realizadas em colaboração com o Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC), um instituto americano de pesquisas ecológicas, com a Universidade Federal do Pará, Universidade Federal do Acre, Fundação Floresta Tropical e o IMAZON. A grande parte das florestas da Bacia Amazônica suportam uma longa estação seca todos os anos. Apesar da seca, as florestas normalmente permanecem resistentes ao fogo, devido `a densidade do dossel e `a umidade liberada pelas plantas. Entretanto, nas secas severas a floresta torna-se inflamável e quando um produtor toca fogo para limpar seu campo, o fogo pode espalhar-se para as florestas vizinhas, causando um dano irreparável, dado que estas florestas possuem poucas defesas para o fogo. No nosso estudo da flamabilidade da floresta, nós monitoramos a umidade da camada de combustível no chão da floresta, as condições do dossel, juntamente com as condições atmosféricas e solo, para tentar prever quando as floresta tornam-se suscetíveis ao fogo .
