Leila Maria Vespoli de Carvalho

Possui graduação em Meteorologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1986), mestrado em Meteorologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1992) e doutorado em Meteorologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1998). Atualmente é Professor Assistente no Department of Geography at the University Of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) na area de área de Ciências do Clima e Investigadora Principal no Earth Research Institute (UCSB). É professora Assistente da Universidade de São Paulo (afastada) e bolsista produtividade do CNPq desde 2002 (afastada). É membro editorial da Revista Meteorological Applications da Royal Meteorological Society. Coordena os grupos "Climate Variation and Change" (CLIVAC-UCSB) (http://www.icess.ucsb.edu/clivac/) e o "Grupo de Estudos em Multiscalas" (GEM- USP) (http://www.iag.usp.br/meteo/gem/). Orienta e pesquisa na área de Geociências, com ênfase em climatologia e com foco especifico em extremos climáticos, mudanças climáticas, monções globais, variabilidade climática em escalas intrasazonais a decadais, clima da Antártica e modelagem regional.

2010 - 2013An integrated view of the American Monsoon Systems: observations, models and probabilistic forecasts
Descrição: This project focuses on the interactions between the North American Monsoon System (NAMS) and South American Monsoon System (SAMS) and identification of common sources and limits of summer season predictability. The main theme of this proposal is to develop a unified view of the American Monsoon System (AMS). The project evaluates the ability of global models from the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) to simulate the variability of the AMS in the present climate. The project is comprised of four interconnected main goals. First, the project will investigate the extent to which the annual evolution of NAMS and SAMS and their temporal variability on ISI time scales can be represented with metrics that effectively describe changes in precipitation and atmospheric circulation in the Americas. Second, this will identify regional physical processes and teleconnections that control the interactions between NAMS and SAMS. Third, this project will evaluate the skill of WCRP CMIP coupled models in representing the observed variations in the AMS. Lastly, this project will implement diagnostic monitoring tools, identify sources of potential predictability and develop probabilistic forecasts of the AMS on subseasonal to seasonal scales. Specific objectives are: I. Develop and validate indices for a unified approach to monitor and forecast the variability of the monsoon systems in the Americas. II. Investigate the associations between the two monsoon systems, the importance of regional processes and remote atmosphere-ocean variations on intraseasonal-to-interannual (ISI) time scales in explaining these linkages. III. Examine the degree to which simulations from the WCRP Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP-3 and CMIP-5) realistically represent the AMS and associations between the monsoons in the Americas. IV. Use NCEP Climate Forecast System (CFS) model outputs (reforecasts and operational) to develop probabilistic for.

2009 - 2011Probabilistic Forecasts of Extreme Events and Weather Hazards over the United States
Descrição: The occurrence of extreme weather events such as heavy precipitation, high surface wind speeds and low temperatures are frequently associated with severe and hazardous conditions with major socio-economic impacts. This project aims to contribute to the goals of the NOAA Climate Test Bed (CTB) Program by carrying on a study of probabilistic forecasts of extreme events and weather hazards over the contiguous United States, Alaska and Hawaii during winter. The project uses retrospective forecasts (RF) from the NCEP Climate Forecast System (CFS) model to specifically develop probabilistic forecasts of extreme events in precipitation, surface temperature and wind speeds on 30-day lead times. Second, an important and novel aspect of this project is the probabilistic forecasts of winter hazards conditioned on the probability of extreme events in precipitation, surface temperature and wind speeds. This component of the project will make use of historical records of weather related hazards in the U.S. and available from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). The proposed research consists of four objectives: I. Evaluate the skills of CFS RF probabilistic forecasts of extreme events of precipitation, surface temperature and wind speeds on 30-day lead times. II. Develop probabilistic forecasts of extreme events of precipitation, surface temperature and wind speeds on 30-day lead times. III. Develop conditional probabilistic forecasts of winter hazards over the U.S. IV. Implement experimental probabilistic forecasts of extreme events of precipitation, surface temperature, wind speeds and winter hazards over the U.S..

2007 - 2010Understanding the Mechanisms of Onset and Demise of the South American Monsoon System
Descrição: Intense convective activity and heavy precipitation begins in northwestern South America in late August and marches progressively southeastward until it reaches the Brazilian highland. The wet season peaks in the core of the Amazon in austral summer, while deep convection begins to weaken over the Amazon in early March and the dry season persists throughout most of the austral winter. It has been increasingly common to refer to this strong summertime convective activity, intense precipitation, and large-scale atmospheric circulation features as the South American monsoon system (SAMS). One of the main goals of the Climate Prediction Program for the Americas (CPPA) is to improve operational monitoring and prediction of intraseasonal to interannual climate and hydrologic variations in the Americas through improved physical process understanding and modeling . SAMS has been extensively investigated over the years and its variability is recognized to play a major role in the climate of tropical and subtropical South America. While some mechanisms for the onset and demise of SAMS have been proposed, a thorough understanding of the dominant dynamical processes determining the migration of SAMS still elude the research community. This project will develop extensive observational and diagnostic analyses to improve and unify our current understanding and monitoring of the onset and demise of SAMS..

2004 - AtualProjeto Tematico: INTERAÇÃO BIOSFERA-ATMOSFERA FASE-2 : CERRADOS E MUDANÇA DE USO DA TERRA. Financ. FAPESP
Descrição: O Cerrado é o bioma primitivo que cobria desde o Sudeste do Brasil até às fronteiras Sul/Leste da Amazônia, estando hoje reduzido a 20% em área, e sendo um dos mais ameaçados ecossistemas globais. Ao passo que o Sudeste foi desmatado principalmente no século 19, há pouco conhecimento no que se refere à sustentabilidade do uso da terra atual na forma de agrossistemas. Em adição, as atividades florestais, de pecuária e a produção de soja decorrem em grande parte do desmatamento na Amazônia e entornos, o que está ameaçando os cerrados próximos à Ilha do Bananal (a maior ilha fluvial do mundo), uma região de vida e recursos hídricos abundantes. Este projeto propõe a quantificação de longo prazo da dinâmica dos fluxos de água, energia e CO2 em biomas de Cerrado (Sudeste do Brasil), cerrados alagáveis (ecótonos) na Ilha do Bananal, e sobre os agrossistemas de Cana-de-açúcar e Eucalipto. As principais metas serão caracterizar e comparar a funcionalidade ecofisiológica, a dependência do clima e disponibilidade hídrica, e padrões de fonte/sumidouro de CO2 entre os ecossistemas. Será investigado o impacto de mudanças de uso da terra no ciclo de água e carbono na escala de microbacia (observacionalmente) e na escala regional (experimentos com modelos numéricos acoplados biosfera-atmosfera-hidrosfera). Em paralelo serão conduzidas investigações ecológicas, essencialmente as de conhecimento das trocas e trajetórias de água, C e N através de técnicas isotópicas. O estudo da variabilidade climática de grande escala e sua influência nos fluxos de superfície (e v.v.) será o tema complementar na abrangência do projeto.

2003 - 2004Decadal Variations in Tropical Intraseasonal Oscillations: Implications for the Pacific Sector. Financ. NOAA: NA030AR4310067
Descrição: It is widely recognized that tropical intraseasonal oscillations (TIO) have a significant role in global scale precipitation changes and a possible interaction with El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This project will investigate decadal variations in tropical intraseasonal oscillations. Specifically, we will address the following objectives: 1) Characterize decadal variations and possible trends in the frequency of occurrence and intensity of TIO; 2) Investigate occurrences of TIO regimes on interannual-to-decadal time scales; 3) Determine to what extent probability distribution functions (PDF s) of different TIO regimes depend on lower boundary forcing (SST); and 4) Examine decadal variations in tropical intraseasonal teleconnection patterns. We will use NCEP/NCAR reanalysis from 1948-2001 to carry out diagnostic analyses. .

Descrição: Um dos principais enfoques desse projeto foi a caracterização dos padrões de precipitação de verão no Brasil e sua associação com a Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS). As propriedades da ZCAS como intensidade, posição geográfica, extensão sobre o oceano e persistência, foram investigadas com uma nova proposta de caracterização desses sistemas utilizando propriedades estruturais observadas no campo de onda longa emergente (OLR). Foram mostradas como as características da ZCAS podem influenciar a distribuição regional de extremos. Outro objetivo desse projeto foi o estudo do papel das variacoes intrasazonais em modular os extremos de precipitacao sobre o Brasil. .

Descrição: This research project is a joint effort between UCSB and the Climate Prediction Center/National Centers for Environmental Prediction (CPC/NCEP). The main goals of this project are to investigate and exploit the intraseasonal and seasonal predictability of precipitation (P) and surface air temperature (Ta) over the western United States during all seasons. The objectives are: 1) implement an experimental real-time statistical forecast of the MJO; 2) determine the relative importance of tropical intraseasonal (MJO) and interannual (ENSO) variations in accounting for intraseasonal predictability of P and Ta over the western U.S.; 3) assess the contribution of seasonal variations in the MJO activity to the seasonal predictability of P and Ta over the western U.S.; 4) implement experimental real-time statistical intraseasonal and seasonal forecasting of P and Ta over the western U.S..

2000 - 2003Variability of Extreme Precipitation Events in South America: An Assessment on Intraseasonal, Interannual and Decadal Time Scales. Financ. NOAA NA16GP1020
Descrição: This project addresses the important issue of occurrence of extreme precipitation events in southeast South America and modulation of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). The specific objectives are: 1) determine the climatology of the SACZ including variations in geographical position, intensity and temporal persistence; 2) develop a comprehensive climatological study of the frequency of occurrence of extreme precipitation events; 3) investigate how intraseasonal, interannual and long-term variations in the SACZ relate to the frequency of extreme rainfall events; 4) characterize mesoscale circulation patterns associated with extreme precipitation events that occur during different manifestations of the SACZ. The methodology includes an extensive diagnostic analysis of rainfall data from a large set of stations in south and southeast Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay..
