João Paulo Andrade Almeida possui graduação em Engenharia de Computação pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (1999), mestrado em Telemática (com louvor) pela University of Twente (2001) e doutorado em Ciência da Computação pela University of Twente (2006). Atualmente é professor adjunto da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo. Tem experiência em Desenvolvimento e Arquitetura de Sistemas Orientados a Serviços e Modelos, Modelagem Conceitual e Modelagem de Organizações e Processos de Negócio.
Foi co-chair do comitê de programa da 13th IEEE International EDOC Enterprise Computing Conference (EDOC 2009), Auckland, Nova Zelândia, e general chair da 14th IEEE International EDOC Enterprise Computing Conference (EDOC 2010), Vitória, ES. É membro do steering committee da conferência IEEE EDOC, membro do comitê de programa de vários eventos internacionais e revisor para vários periódicos internacionais. É pesquisador principal de projeto CNPq/FAPES PRONEX.

| 2011 - 2014 | Ontologias de Fundamentação para Interoperabilidade Semântica de Serviços em Governo Eletrônico |
| Descrição: Este projeto concentra-se em avanços no suporte teórico e prático para a engenharia de ontologias visando sua aplicação ao problema de interoperabilidade semântica. Ênfase será dada à qualidade das linguagens, metodologias e ferramentas utilizadas na definição de ontologias visando o uso de ontologias no problema de interoperabilidade semântica, com aplicação no domínio de Governo Eletrônico.
Como pontos de partida serão utilizadas as ontologias de fundamentação: (i) UFO (Unified Foundational Ontology) proposta em [Guizzardi & Herre & Wagner, 2002; Guizzardi, 2005, Guizzardi & Masolo & Borgo, 2006; Guizzardi, 2007; Guizzardi & Wagner, 2008; Guizzardi, 2009; Guizzardi, 2010; Guizzardi & Wagner, 2010a] por pesquisadores do Núcleo de Estudos em Modelagem Conceitual e Ontologias (NEMO) junto a colaboradores da comunidade internacional de ontologias; e (ii) DOLCE (Descriptive Ontology for Linguistic and Cognitive Engineering) proposta pelo parceiro internacional deste projeto (Laboratory for Applied Ontology (LOA), ISTC, CNR). Estas ontologias incorporam avanços complementares e serão harmonizadas para prover uma fundamentação semântica única para aplicação no problema da interoperabilidade semântica no domínio de Governo Eletrônico.
Este projeto de pesquisa fortalecerá o Núcleo de Estudos em Modelagem Conceitual e Ontologias (NEMO) reafirmando a sua posição de excelência no cenário nacional e internacional. Em particular, o projeto permitirá o engajamento de outros pesquisadores nos trabalhos que já vêm sendo realizados, bem como ampliará as possibilidades de colaboração entre os membros do grupo e de outras instituições, notadamente o Departamento de Ciência da Computação (DCC) da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), o Departamento de Informática da PUC-RJ, o Laboratory for Applied Ontology (LOA) ISTC-CNR e a Brandenburg University of Technology at Cottbus.

| Descrição: Este projeto concentra-se em avanços no uso de ontologias de fundamentação para interoperabilidade semântica de serviços desenvolvidos independentemente. O problema de interoperabilidade semântica com base em ontologias é abordado de duas formas complementares. Primeiramente, uma vez que serviços eletrônicos são tipicamente desenvolvidos independentemente, há a necessidade de se capturar a ontologia de domínio subjacente aos processos dos diversos parceiros (clientes e/ou provedores) presentes em um ecossistema de serviços. Adicionalmente, os diversos serviços devem ser descritos, descobertos, compostos e executados. Desta forma, é necessário explicitar as características dos diversos serviços, o que pressupõe a existência de uma ontologia compartilhada de serviços. Neste projeto serão harmonizadas as ontologias de fundamentação UFO e DOLCE, para prover uma base semântica abrangente para categorias ontológicas, relações, conceitos sociais e intencionais que possam ser usados na: (i) definição de uma ontologia de serviços e (ii) na definição de ontologias de domínio para composição (integração) de serviços específicos. | Descrição: Este projeto investiga técnicas para a captura e formalização de uma Arquitetura Corporativa de Tecnologia da Informação (Enterprise Architecture) em uma descrição arquitetural para que esta sirva como um veículo para documentação, visualização, análise, manipulação e evolução de uma organização e seus sistemas. São investigadas em particular: (i) conceituações básicas para os diversos domínios de interesse das Arquiteturas Corporativas de TI (formalizadas através de ontologias de fundamentação) e (ii) técnicas para estabelecer a correspondência entre estes domínios de forma sistemática. As técnicas de modelagem de arquiteturas serão investigadas no escopo do Desenvolvimento Orientado a Modelos.

| Descrição: Este projeto consiste em pesquisa para o desenvolvimento de técnicas para modelagem conceitual de sistemas de informação, assim como para o projeto e especificação de sistemas através dos processos de negócios (Business Process Management) e serviços (Service-Oriented Architectures). Um aspecto importante do projeto é sua inserção nos esforços de Desenvolvimento Orientado a Modelos (Model-Driven Development, e Model-Driven Architecture), com o desenvolvimento de ferramental de software livre para as técnicas de modelagem propostas. As técnicas e o ferramental a serem desenvolvidos têm caráter inovador e empregam tecnologias de desenvolvimento atuais e de alto conteúdo tecnológico. As técnicas e o ferramental a serem desenvolvidos propiciarão um aumento significativo na produtividade e qualidade do projeto de sistemas de informação, tendo aplicação imediata em instituições sediadas no município de Vitória.. | Descrição: Este projeto visa a aquisição de infra-estrutura para pesquisas na área de modelagem para sistemas abertos e para realização de ferramental de sofware livre para tal modelagem. As técnicas de modelagem a serem desenvolvidas neste contexto incluem linguagens para análise de sistemas e ontologias (modelagem conceitual) e projeto e especifição de sistemas abertos organizados através de arquitectura orientada a serviços (Service-Oriented Architecture, SOA). Aspectos importantes do projeto são sua inserção nos esforços de Desenvolvimento Orientado a Modelos (Model-Driven Development, MDD, e Model-Driven Architecture, MDA) e a criação de um núcleo de pesquisa e formação de competências nesta área no Espírito Santo.. | Descrição: SPICE (Service Platform for Innovative Communication Environment) is addressing the still unsolved problem of designing, developing and putting into operation efficient and innovative mobile Service creation/execution platforms for networks beyond 3G.
This project will research, prototype and evaluate an extendable overlay architecture and framework to support, easy and quick service creation, test and deployment of intelligent mobile communication and information services. Building on significant advances in IT technologies, the SPICE platform will support multiple heterogeneous execution platforms allowing for new, innovative services to be spread across different operator domains and over different countries realizing a variety of business models.
The SPICE consortium consists of 23 partners in 11 countries: 13 large industrials (Telecom operators, equipment manufacturers, platform developers), 7 research centers and universities, 2 SMEs, 1 consultancy company.

| Descrição: The main results planned in the project are:
a conceptual framework with associated formal and best practice techniques that can be used for the design of services;
techniques for representing semantic descriptions of run-time resources and information, such as user context, service capabilities, user profiles and provider profiles;
a service design and service architecture definition methodology;
an integrated software tool to support design operations and analysis of design results (both behaviour models and semantic descriptions);
case studies in which the above mentioned results are applied and evaluated, in cooperation with other projects within the Freeband Communication programme.. Applications are independent of the underlying platform or the network used, and can operate in multi-operator and multi-vendor environments
Seamless integration between networks and services is possible based on web services with clear, standardised interfaces for information exchange
Services, and multimedia services in particular, can be adapted to the capacities of the network and the end user's mobile device
Services can be personalised
Intelligent searching for relevant services in a broad and dynamic range of services
Combination of voice and data services
In the past, standards organisations such as OSA and Parlay have called for such benefits. However, in practice, integration with interfaces according to these standards remains a complex issue. In addition, the relevant knowledge is hard to transfer. This hampers rapid application development. Because of their transparent approach, web services can potentially access a much larger market. And because of the worldwide standardisation of the publication, description and invocation of services, knowledge regarding these services is transferred more easily. The WASP project investigates the possibilities of this new approach in the context of mobile, context-aware services.

| Descrição: The main objective of this project is to provide the industry with the methodology and tools to apply model driven architectures and related technologies and to contribute to industrial standardisation bodies in order to obtain standards suitable for telecommunications applications.
Furthermore to advance the current state-of-the-art by doing research in areas that have not been addressed so far, like business modelling, QoS awareness, model transformations and their traceability, and UML improvements.
MODA-TEL is a joint effort of European telecommunication network operators, service providers, tool vendors, systems integrators and academia with the objective to advance the software engineering practices, specifically addressing the telecommunications domain in which systems and services are very complex and heterogeneous, requiring always legacy integration. The detailed objectives are:
To assess the foundation of MDA by identifying the relevant key technologies and the available tool support
To identify the core ingredients and technologies of a deployable MDA and to identify the relationships between these ingredients and technologies
To develop and deliver a methodology for the application of MDA technologies
To develop and specify a formalism for model transformation techniques
To apply the MDA methodology on telecom specific applications, including platform independent models for these applications
To specify and prototype tool extensions to support necessary steps in the software development process and information integration
To specify the tool chain (extensions) supporting the automation of the software development and operation processes, as well as information integration and management
To actually apply the methodology and the tool chain on the telecom specific applications
Conduct research on the identified open issues stemming from the assessment of the foundations of MDA
