| 2003 - 2003 | effecs of rainfall on herbivory in a semi-deciduous tropical rainforest (DAAD) |
| Descrição: The effect of rain on herbivorous activity was studied in a semidecidious tropical lowland rainforest in Panama. In particular the objectives were to asses (i) the proximate effects of rain on the activity of different types of herbivores, and (ii) the overall effects of rainfall on plants exposed to natural herbivore pressure. To achieve this, two sub-projects were carried out:
1) Effects of rainfall on the foraging activity of the leaf-cutting ant (LCA) Atta colombica
This investigation included both field observations during natural rain events and experimental studies, i.e. sprinkling host plants with a 'rain-simulating shower'.
2) Effects of rain on the overall herbivory rates on the understorey shrub Hybanthus prunifolius.
The findings suggest that rain may be a relevant factor affecting the feeding activities of herbivores, especially in high precipitation climates, such as tropical rainforest. Nevertheless the resulting feeding losses greatly depend on the identity of the concerned herbivore, its foraging mode, and how fast it recovers the feeding rates prior to a given rain event. . | 2001 - Atual | Interacoes troficas em florestas fragmentadas: o sistema modelo das formigas cortadeiras (Projeto Capes/DFG) |
| Descrição: This study will examine the consequences of habitat fragmentation on food webs with the trophic cascade plant - fungus/leaf-cutting ant - predator/parasite as a model system. Leaf-cutting ant density and diversity are commonly observed to increase in disturbed habitats, but the causes of this increase have not yet been assessed. We believe that both resource availability (bottom-up forces) and predation and parasitism control (top-down forces) are less effective in fragmented compared to continuous forests. In order to test our predictions, we will conduct descriptive and experimental studies in the Brazilian Atlantic forest, one of the world´s most fragmented and endangered forest ecosystem. Bottom-up control refers to factors that influence a trophic level from below, i.e. in the leaf-cutting ant case the host plants. Fragments contain relatively more pioneer species than continuous forests and these ants are known to prefer pioneers species. Therefore, we hypothesize that (1) plant defense (2) diet breadth, (3) home range are reduced, and (4) herbivory rate is increased in forest fragments. On the other hand, top-down control occurs when a trophic levels depends on effects of consumers from higher trophic levels. Since in a fragmentation process natural enemies are more likely to be lost than their phytophagous prey, we further hypothesize that leaf-cutting ant populations experience a weaker top-down control in fragments. Based on this assumption we intend to investigate whether (1) predation rate, (2) worker and fungus parasitism are higher and (3) colony founding is lower in continuous forests.
This research provides an integrative approach to test the effects of habitat fragmentation on trophic cascades. By determining the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up forces the study may contribute to a better understanding of the key role of leaf-cutting ants in neotropical forests and the underlying processes.. | 2000 - 2001 | The Role of foraging trails and induced plant defense for herbivory patterns of leaf-cutting ants in French Guiana (LSF) |
| Descrição: The distribution and formation of foraging trails have largely been neglected as factors explaining harvesting patterns of leaf-cutting ants. We applied fractal analysis, circular and conventional statistics to published and newly recorded trail maps of seven Atta colonies focussing on three aspects: permanence, spatio-temporal plasticity, and ontogeny. Long-term trail patterns of young and adult leaf-cutting ant colonies revealed that foraging activities were focussed on distinct, static sectors that made up only parts of the potential foraging ranges of both age classes. Within these foraging sectors trails were typically ephemeral and highly variable in space and time. These ephemeral trails were concentrated around permanent trunk trails in adult colonies and around nest entrances in young colonies. Besides these similarities, an ontogenetic comparison of colony trail systems indicated striking differences: Young colonies exploited fewer leaf sources, used smaller and less complex systems of foraging trails, preferred different life forms as host plants, and switched hosts more often. Based on these analyses, we propose a general hypothesis which describes the foraging pattern in Atta leaf-cutting ants as a net result of initial foraging experiences, spatio-temporal distribution of suitable host plants, energetic constraints, and other factors such as seasonality and interspecific predation.. | 2000 - 2001 | interaction of EFN-visiting ants in Passiflora coccinea (LSF) |
| Descrição: In this study we present evidence for a short-term reduction of ant activity on extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) of Passiflora coccinea (Aubl., Passifloraceae) after episodes of rainfall. We monitored ant attack of simulated herbivores (termites) before and after watering treatments on reproductive branches of P. coccinea and the adjacent vegetation, in the lowland moist forest of French Guiana. Besides a delayed ant response, watering resulted in reduced rates of encounter, attack, and removal of termites. Other kinds of disturbances, such as herbivore presence, artificial and natural damage, or even shaking have been shown to induce increased ant activity on ant-plants. In contrast rain events may be considered a type of disturbance that reduces ant activity. Consequently, the anti-herbivore activity of ants visiting EFNs may be constrained by rainfall.. | 2000 - 2001 | diversity and function of mutualistic actinomycetes in leaf-cutting ants (LSF) |
| Descrição: Acromyrmex octospinosus colonies of distinct habitats at Paracou (French Guiana) have been used to isolate different strains of Streptomycetes. Colony specifity of the bacterial communities was high, only 15% of all species occurred in more than one colony and just 5% were present in both habitats. This low similarity between colonies suggests that the total number of morphospecies in attine populations is unexpectedly high. Bioassays with Streptomycetes against the garden parasite Escovopsis indicated that the inhibitory effects differed largely between morphospecies. Considering high rates of resistance formation in known fungal parasites the mutualistic interaction between fungus growing ants and a broad arsenal of Streptomyces bacteria may be seen as an evolutionary response to the specialised and highly virulent garden parasite Escovopsis. . | 1999 - 2002 | Distribution, abundance, and population regulation of phasmids (Orthoptera, Phasmatodea) in a tropical moist rainforest (DAAD, STRI) |
| Descrição: This project was aimed to study the phasmids in a semideciduous rainforest of Barro Colorado Island (Panama). Main foci of this research were abundance, distribution patterns, diet breadth and specialisation degree of phasmids (Berger& Wirth 2001a,b). Community parameters were assessed by nocturnal line-transect censuses and diet breadth was determined by means of feeding-trial bioassays. In order to evaluate bottom-up and top down factors we analyzed feeding prefercences as affected by leaf characters and quantified predation by means of field experiments (Berger & Wirth, accepted).. | 1998 - 2000 | Dynamics of Canopy structure and Light Interception in Temperate Oak Forests (Forstliche Versuchsanstalt Rheinland-Pfalz) |
| Descrição: The leaf area index (LAI) is the most frequently used parameter in the analysis of the structure of forest stands, which is a key factor of forest ecological systems. Due to the time-intensive and labour-consuming methodology of direct, non-destructive estimations of the forest structure, indirect methods are frequently used. These take advantage of the close coupling of foliage surface distribution and radiation transfer by the crown space. However, the light interception method indicates inadequacies, that were quantified as a different to direct methods, e.g. litterfall. Radiation measurements lead to underestimate the LAI if leaf elements indicate clustering. On the other hand they lead to over-estimations in high skeleton proportions of the vegetation (twigs, branches). To our knowledge, a differentiated estimation of these two factors does not exist so far. The aim of this study was therefore (1) a separate estimation of LAI and WAI (woody area index) of a Central European forest by comparison of the radiation weakening in summery foliaged and in wintery non-foliaged status as well as (2) the investigation of a clumping factor by comparison of the results of the LAI determined from litterfall. By inversion of radiation data and empirically determined leaf- and branch angle distributions, structural parameters of oak/ beech mixed woodland were decided. In consideration of the data determined in winter a cumulative WAI of 0,64 was calculated. The appropriate modification of the model calculation resulted a middle cumulative LAI of 5.1. In the case of the PAI (plant area index), the value of 5,5 was degraded by 4,2 % in relation to the value of the modified modelling (5,74), since an overlay of foliage and wood elements can not be detected with the conventional calculation of the PAI. Also, a direct determination of the leaf area index was archived through the litterfall method.. Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. | 1996 - 1997 | Dispersao de sementes por formigas cortadeiras |
| Descrição: While leaf-cutter ants are thought to collect mainly vegetative plant material, they have also been observed collecting seeds or fruit parts on the forest floor (Alvarez-Buylla and Martínez-Ramos 1990, Kaspari 1996). Apart from foraging on Miconia fruits as reported in the present sudy, leaf-cutter ants were also observed carrying considerable amounts of Brosimum alicastrum Sw. and Cecropia spec. in their nests (Wirth, 1996) and Leal & Oliveira (1997) found them foraging on 6 species of Brazilian cerrado vegetation. Under some circumstances, seed removal and relocation by leaf-cutter ants might even be sufficient to affect local recruitment patterns of trees. For example, in Costa Rica, Atta cephalotes can remove all fallen fig fruit from beneath a Ficus hondurensis crown in a single night (Roberts and Heithaus 1986), while in Venezuela, seedling recruitment of the savanna tree Tapirira velutinifolia was positively associated with the seed harvesting and seed cleaning activities of Atta laevigata (Farji Brenner and Silva 1996)..
