Vladimiro Miranda é Doutorado em Engenharia Eletrotécnica (1982) pela FEUP (Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Portugal). É docente na FEUP desde 1980 e no momento Professor Catedrático, lecionando disciplinas na área da energia. Foi, desde 2000 até Junho de 2018, Diretor (presentemente com a designação de Administrador, membro do Conselho de Administração) do INESC TEC (instituto privado, sem fins lucrativos e de utilidade pública), declarado Laboratório Associado do Estado pelo MCTES - Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior do Governo de Portugal. Tem sido sempre pesquisador no Centro de Sistemas de Energia do INESC TEC. Presentemente, exerce a função de Diretor Associado (Relações Internacionais) Atualmente, é Diretor Presidente do INESC P&D Brasil (desde 2012). Foi anteriormente Presidente do INESC Macau, China (1996 e 1997). É atualmente Diretor do OCEANUS ? Marine Research and Innovation da Universidade do Porto, Portugal, Professor Visitante honorário da Universidade de Novi Sad, Sérvia. É Consultor Internacional das seguintes instituições: Departamento de Engenharia Elétrica da Polytechnic University de Hong Kong (PolyU); IIT - Instituto de Investigaciones Tecnológicas, Madrid, Espanha; IEE - Instituto de Energia Eléctrica, Universidad Nacional de San Juan, Argentina; membro do Conselho Científico do IRESEN, Agência do Governo de Marrocos para a pesquisa em energias renováveis. É ainda Conselheiro Científico do Laboratorio de Defesa Biológica e Química das Forças Armadas de Portuga, e membro do Conselho Doutoral da Universudade de Trás os Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Portugal. Foi Pesquisador Visitante da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Brasil, entre 2015 e 2018, e Professor Visitante na Universidade Federal do Pará, Brasil, em 2005, com bolsa da CAPES com a categoria de Professor Titular. Anteriormente, fora Professor Catedrático na Universidade de Macau, China (1996 e 1997). Orientou, coorientou ou cooperou na orientação de numerosas teses de doutoramento e mestrado em temas de energia com alunos de diversas regiões do mundo e em universidades em Argentina, Brazil, Bósnia, China, Croácia, Equador, Noruega, Portugal ou Suécia. Tem servido na Administração de empresas incubadas pelo sistema INESC (RUMOS SA, SmartWatt SA). Também exerceu funções de consultor para empresas do setor elétrico ou dedicadas à inovação e para a Agência de Inovação (ADI), entidade dependente do Governo de Portugal dedicada à inovação e transferência de tecnologia. Tem vindo a servir como avaliador de projetos para a ANI (Agência Nacional de Inovação) e de bolsas na FCT (Fundação de Ciência e Tecnologia) do MCTES, Portugal, bem como avaliador de projetos para as organizações governamentais similares da África do Sul, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Croácia e Noruega. Serviu igualmente como Consultor do Programa de Evaluación Institucional de OCT do MinCyT do Governo da Argentina para a avaliação de institutos de investigação/pesquisa em ciência e tecnologia. A sua especialidade incide no planejamento e operação de sistemas de potência incluindo integração em larga escala de geração convencional e renovável e na abordagem de Inteligência Computacional na construção de modelos. É autor de um elevado número de publicações nas mais prestigiadas revistas internacionais da especialidade, principalmente nas Transactions do IEEE. É reconhecido como especialista mundial em Inteligência Computacional em Sistemas de Energia, tendo sido por esse motivo elevado ao grau de Fellow do IEEE (USA). Foi-lhe atribuído em 2013 o prémio IEEE PES Ramakumar Family Renewable Energy Excellence Award. É ainda membro do IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Program. (Texto informado pelo autor)

SECRETS - Sustainable Energy Clusters REalized Through Smart grids
Descrição: This project pursues a twofold objective: 1) to develop new models that go beyond the academic flavor and may be adopted by the industry and 2) to generate capacity building in expert human resources in Morocco. The general project goals are to develop a specification for a smart grid environment, able to deal with cluster-optimization, to implement a laboratory facility able to test the relevant concepts and to produce specifications that may be passed to the industry, including electric power system operator, in order to be implemented in large scale..

LASCA - Large Scale Computing with Autoencoders - Application to Power Systems
Descrição: The project LASCA aimed at testing a novel strategy to address large scale optimization problems, when using metaheuristics as a solver. It is known that the meta-heuristics behaviour (such as in evolutionary algorithms) degrades quite considerably with the dimensional growth of the search space. The conjecture behind the LASCA approach, therefore, was that a reduction in the search space dimension, even at the cost of some loss in precision, would lead, at least in some classes of problems, to a speed up in convergence of some meta-heuristic and, in a favourable scenario, to a convergence with higher precision (for instance, from escaping to getting trapped in local optima). The strategy put to test was the following: 1. Given a problem, run a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm for some generations, and collect data about the progress of the search. 2. Use these data to train an autoencoder 3. Use the autoencoder to obtain a projection of the search into a smaller dimension space 4. Organize the progress of the search for the optimum in the new space 5. At some point, return to the higher dimension space and tune up the solution. The project success involved a certain level of risk: the strategy might prove not valid, or not workable, or not good enough and not compensating for the effort put in its implementation. The development of the project proved this assessment of the risk involved to be correct. But, finally, success was achieved and the project could be completed with extremely positive results. As an extremely valuable complementary result (nevertheless crucial to the success of the project), one could derive new principles and a new procedure to train autoassociateive neural networks in a much more efficient way than reported in the state-of-the-art literature ? based on principles related to Information Theoretic Learning and resorting to unsupervised training of the first half of the neural network instead of the classical supervised training of the whole network. This achievement was not predicted in the project proposal. In summary, the project demonstrated that the new solving strategy devised may produce very good results. Therefore, it has the potential to become one important weapon in the toolkit of the large scale programming solver. Furthermore, a new and more efficient process of training autoencoders was created. The search for and validation of these scientific and very valuable results allowed the production of contributions for internations journal papers that exceed what was predicted in the project proposal (5 against 4). Papers in conferences were naturally produced. The work contributed strongly to the contents of one PhD thesis and moderately to a second PhD thesis..

GEMS - Gross errors and missing signals: new concepts in power system state estimation
Descrição: The project GEMS aimed at proposing a new approach to the specific problems of gross error and missing signal handling in power system state estimation (SE), with emphasis to distribution systems where these problems arise more frequently and affecting greatly the system state estimation. The following basic new ideas were to be explored in this project: 1. In parameter estimation, replacing the commonly used Least Squares (or Minimum Square Error) criterion by an Entropy-related criterion; 2. Recomposing missing measurements, in particular topology information related to the status of switching devices, through the use of autoencoder technology. The use of entropy-related concepts should lead to a natural filtering of bad data by treating them as outliers. This should allow one to avoid splitting the SE process into three sub-optimized steps, as it is currently done: a first step to define the topology, a second step to eliminate bad measurements and a third step to estimate parameters. These steps are not independent because a wrong definition of topology may suggest as gross errors values that otherwise would be estimated as correct. Additionally, autoencoders are special neural networks that have already been proposed for the function of recomposing missing sensor signals. Project GEMS should explore this property, namely for missing information on switching device status, in order to generate adequate pseudo-measurements whenever necessary, to then enter in a process coupled with an entropy criterion to generate the final estimation..

ARGUS - Wind Power Forecasting and Electricity Markets
Descrição: The overall objective of this research project is to improve wind power forecasting methodologies and their use in power system operations. The project is structured into two parts. The first part concentrates on two areas: (1) surveying existing wind power forecasting methodologies and tools and (2) identifying strengths and limitations of different approaches. The second part of the project addresses how operators of wind power plants and power systems can use advanced wind forecasting technologies to improve their operations, in the time span from several days ahead to real-time operations. New Software Code: ARGUS-PRIMA (Prediction Intelligent Machine) Argonne National Laboratory and INESC Porto have developed novel computational learning algorithms for wind power point and uncertainty forecasting. Testing of the new algorithms on wind farm data from the Midwest show significant improvements in forecast performance compared to existing methods. The forecasting algorithms and test results are documented in the project report "Development and Testing of Improved Statistical Methods for Wind Power Forecasting", as well as in several journal and conference papers. The software code is now available under a licensing agreement to facilitate technology transfer to industry..
